Laurel shortstop signs to play baseball at MCC

Dawson Cortese, the Laurel Dodgers star short stop will be proudly donning the Pioneers’ blue and white baseball uniform next fall. Cortese recently accepted an athletic scholarship to play for Miles Community College in Miles City, Montana.
Dawson Cortese states of his opportunity to attend MCC, “I think it will be a great start for my academic and athletic career. My older brothers played for Coach Brabant and I look forward to playing for him as well.”
This past year Cortese was proud to represent the Laurel Dodgers who finished third at the state tournament and second at regionals. During his career with the Dodgers his team won the district championship every year. Last year was a breakout year offensively for Cortese as he finished the season with a .463 batting average including 25 doubles, 7 triples, 6 home runs and 83 RBIs and was named the 2016 All-Conference/All-State Shortstop.  Through ten games this season Cortese’s batting average is .448 with 3 doubles, 2 triples and a home run coupled with 10 RBIs.
Dawson Cortese is the son of Dave and Jennifer Cortese of Laurel and has played all four years under the tutelage of Laurel Dodgers head coach Doug Studiner.
In addition to the baseball team, Cortese was an honor roll student that also played one year of basketball and football at Laurel where he was recognized as a 2016 All-Conference Wide Receiver.
“We are excited to continue the tradition of bringing quality players from Laurel and Coach Studiner on top of the 3rd brother in the Cortese family.” Said MCC head coach Jeff Brabant. “Dawson will be no different than Dakota and Zach; he will bring toughness, work ethic and of course great skill to our program.  His ability to step right in and make an impact make him a quality get for our program.  I’m proud that we continue to get ‘repeat’ athletes from great programs around the state...that speaks highly of what we are about here.  Dawson will produce great things in our uniform for the next two years.”
Dawson Cortese plans on earning his Associate’s Degree in General Studies at MCC.
