The Laurel Police Department received a report of gun shots and a woman screaming at about 2:30 a.m. Monday morning from the 400 block of Roundhouse Dr. Officers responded and received back-up assistance from troopers with the Montana Highway Patrol and a Stillwater County Sheriff’s deputy.
When officers arrived, the suspect began firing a weapon at them from inside the residence. A Highway Patrol Trooper had a round graze his boot.
The woman and her two children were able to escape the house and get to safety.
Officers then spoke to the suspect who was threatening suicide and suicide by cop. Negotiations with the man were conducted by Laurel’s Captain Mark Guy and continued for about two hours before the suspect finally surrendered at 5:10 a.m.
Charles Williams, 37, of Laurel, was arrested and charged with three counts of assault with a weapon, criminal endangerment and partner family member assault, second offense. Williams was transported to the Yellowstone County Detention Facility.
Police spent hours after the arrest securing the scene and collecting evidence.
Tuesday morning repeat
On Tuesday morning, LPD officers were called to a home on 13th Ave. for another possibly suicidal subject. At first, officers believed the man to be holed up in the house, but they eventually found him elsewhere several hours after the initial call.
