Laurel Cross Country heads to Hardin for Divisionals on Saturday and Coach Amy Caldeira’s enthusiasm is palpable.
“It’s exciting when 10 weeks and hundreds of miles come down to these last two races,” she said of Divisionals in Hardin on Saturday and State in Helena next week.
This week’s practices and the Divisional meet are all about the team, she said.
“Our team is built around hard work at practice and a strong team aspect. Everyone has contributed to the team, regardless of their time.”
Caldeira said Hardin is the boys team’s stiffest competition.
“It will come down to who has a better day. We finished either in front and behind them by a few points all year.”
She said the girls team might surprise the top two teams.
“Our girls are up against the returning state champions (Hardin) and a strong Miles City team. The girls’ times are moving in the right direction.”
The top seven from every Class A team at Divisionals qualifies for State, and the top 15 medal at both Divisionals and State.
For individuals, junior Levi Taylor and freshman Grace Timm are ranked #1 and #2 in the state based on their season times and are expected to have strong finishes.
Taylor and Timm each won five-of-eight individual meets this year, and finished second in one.
Caldeira is proud of the Locos’ teams this year and says there is more to the team than just running fast.
“We are lucky to have kids representing our school that have a great work ethic and a mutual respect for each other and the sport.”
Divisionals begins at noon on Saturday.
