Laurel boys notch first league win versus Livingston

The Laurel Locomotives got some mojo back on Saturday with a league win over Livingston.
In fact, the dominant 3-0 win over Livingston was the Loco’s first league win of the season and it came at the halfway mark of the Eastern A season.
“It was an aggressive game, it was a good game,” said LHS coach Leroy VanderPool. “We decided to pour it on in the second half to get the win.”
The game was knotted at zeros at halftime but two Luis Vega goals and a header from Spencer Maurer from a set piece pushed the Locos to victory.
LHS had six shots on goal and keeper Kaleb Ripley had 3 saves.
VanderPool said the win will give the team momentum to give league leading Belgrade a tough game in Belgrade on Saturday. The season doesn’t get any easier as LHS hosts Billings Central on Oct. 6.
The regular season ends on Oct. 8 in Livingston.
VanderPool needs two more league wins to move into the playoffs. That means LHS has to avenge losses to Central or Belgrade.
“Actions speak louder than the coach,” he said. “ The win Saturday was the kind of noise this team can make.”

Billings Central 4, Laurel 0
The LHS boys held a fast Central High team to a 0-0 tie at halftime but two Central goals in a minute in the second half took all the wind out of the team as they fell 4-0.
If a person ever needed an example of what momentum can do in soccer, this was the game.
Played at Rocky Mountain College’s football stadium, each team seemed to respond to the atmosphere and played punch and counter-punch the whole first half.
“Great place to play,” said VanderPool, “and for a half of soccer we played up to the environment.”
Laurel could only muster three shots on goal to Central’s 25. Eric Alves had eight saves and Cade McIlvain had two. Central’s goalie had no saves.
Central’s Josh Bundy was the player of the game with his two unassisted goals that put LHS away.
“Central’s pressure got to us and we lost our passing game,” said VanderPool.
Belgrade sits on top of the Eastern A with a 3-0-0 conference record after defeating Central in Billings on Saturday. Central is in second with a 2-1-0 record and Laurel is third with a 1-2-0 record.
Livingston is 0-3.
