The future is only as certain as the day-by-day changes that follow the wave of the pandemic-induced crisis in our community. In short, this means that athletics of any level or sport can really only proceed to resume training at the same rate as the rest of the nation. This rate is as predictable as the rising sun, dependent on the direction of oncoming executive orders. Granted, there are individual differences between each organization. Before COVID-19 jumbled up the seasons ahead, three Laurel High School graduates-to-be had recently signed with college recruiters to go to school and play their sport in the 2020-2021 season with their assigned universities. After the cancellation of spring sports, the continuation of fall sports is undetermined but updates are soon to come. released a “Class of 2020 college recruit tracker,” listing the Montanans who have either signed or committed to play college sports in the 2020-2021 season. The list is updated as submissions are entered, and anyone can check the site to stay updated on the current status of student athletes from Montana who have been recruited. From Laurel, there are three.

Signed on January 27, Madison Cooney, an All-State and All-Conference golfer from Laurel, committed to Dickinson State University (ND) to play on the women’s golf team. This year, Cooney placed 12th at State and 10th at Divisionals.

Ethan Renner, a running back for the Locomotive football team, signed with Montana Tech on February 14 to play college football in the fall. Renner made All-State and All-Conference his senior year as a running back, and was chosen to play in the EastWest Shrine game this summer.

On March 11, Lizzie Wisecup, signed with Montana State University-Billings with commitment to the Yellowjacket cross-country team, as well as track and field. Wisecup goes the distance, qualifying for the state meet all four years of high school, as well as qualifying the last three years in track and field. She was cross-country team caption at Laurel her junior and senior year, and her fastest mile recorded is 6:01.
