Lady Locos softball win first game at state, lose last two

After finishing second at divisionals two weekends ago, the Laurel Locomotives softball team traveled to Polson to compete in the Class A state softball tournament. They were the second seed from the East in the state tournament after a successful divisionals tournament. They were unable to compete for the first place trophy, due to their championship game with Hardin being cancelled.

In this state tournament, the Lady Locos, unfortunately, didn’t make it as far. They looked great in their first game against Park County. The Locos scored four early runs and another six runs in the third inning to combine for 10 early runs. They didn’t score the rest of the game, but their pitching carried them to the win.

Against Frenchtown, the Locomotives did look like the better offense. They out-hit Frenchtown nine to three, but Frenchtown scored two more runs than the Lady Locos in this game. Consequently, Laurel suffered a loss in their second game of the tournament, which forced them to go to the consolation bracket for the rest of the way. But they still had a chance to play for second place with how the bracket was set up.

Unfortunately, Laurel showed to be no match for the Ronan Lady Chiefs. Ronan quickly scored nine runs in the first two innings, and scored six in the fourth and fifth innings combined, to end the game after less than five innings. The Lady Locos were only able to add two runs on the board in this game. This game ended the Lady Locos season.

Congrats to the Laurel Locos girls softball team on the great first season under new head coach Aleesa Olson. A second place trophy at divisionals is always a successful way to end the year. Coach Olson and her team will now say goodbye to Taryn Wommack, Zoe Thomae, Brooke Anderson, and Riley Chapman. These four seniors will be graduated and have played their final games as Locomotives. Congrats to these girls on successful careers in the purple and gold.
