Kurt Duane Gomer

Kurt Duane Gomer died of esophageal cancer on January 2, 2017. He was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on January 17, 1962, to Alvin and Beverly Morrison Gomer. His grandparents were Henry and Molly Gomer, long-time residents of Laurel. He spent a lot of his growing up years in Laurel, with his grandparents and lived in Laurel for a short period of time. The family moved several times, due to his father’s railroad job and Kurt graduated from Galesburg, Illinois High School and received his bachelor’s degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He held a variety of jobs in the food service and restaurant business, before moving to Idaho, where he worked for the Coeur d’ Alene Indian Casino. He was Food and Beverage Director for the Casino Resort and Hotel at Worley, Idaho.
In 1988, Kurt and Mary Dobson were married and made their home in Post Falls, Idaho. They had two children, Nathan and Brooklyn. Kurt was very active in all aspects of his children’s sports, coaching them and mentoring them. He especially loved golf and often played at the course near his home.
In addition to his family in Post Falls, he is survived by his brother, Scott, of Madison, Wisconsin; two aunts in Laurel, Dorothy Rodreick and Virginia Gomer; an uncle in Laurel, Ken Gomer; and an uncle in Florida, Richard Gomer. He also leaves behind many relatives in the Laurel area.
A celebration of his life was held on Jan. 5, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Coeur d’ Alene, of which he was a member. Kurt was able to reach out to anyone he met and his service attracted an overflow crowd. He will be missed by many.
