Joliet volleyball ready for a strong season

By Carla Hutson Outlook staff writer Joliet head volleyball coach Colette Webber is gearing up for a great season. With a solid group of returning players and new talent coming in, Webber predicts that Joliet volleyball will a strong conference competitor. Returning players include CaitLyne DuBeau as right side hitter, Melissa Daly as a defensive specialist and right side hitter, Maelyn Kisthard as a defensive specialist, Danni Nardinger as libero, Holly Nowak as a middle hitter, Shalee Unger and Libby Zorn as outside hitters and Vanessa Oliphant. Webber is also excited about her younger players. “Sophomores Kallie Zinne and Lauren Hoines will be fun to watch,” said Webber. “And we have a stellar group of freshmen coming in. They’re very talented.” The team is shaping up to be well-rounded with great leadership that work well together, said Webber. Her main goal is to ensure that they play consistent each time they go out on the court and keep mentally tough against strong opponents. Throughout her entire coaching process, Webber focuses on character, a good attitude and hard work ethic. Rather than having a “perfect” team, Webber would rather see her players make mistakes and learn from them. “We’re going to make mistakes,” she said. “But success is measured by learning from those mistakes.” As always, volleyball powerhouses Red Lodge and Huntley Project will be tough competitors in the conference, but Webber isn’t worried. “I think if we can be mentally tough and consistent, we will surprise people this season,” she said. Webber is entering her ninth year as Joliet’s head volleyball coach. In addition to her current role, she has coached K-6 soccer, basketball and volleyball. Webber will be aided by assistant coaches Tanielle Beede, Madison Unger and Bobbi Bushman. “Playing on a team isn’t a right, it’s a privilege,” Webber finished. “Having good character is everything. If your team has good character and are driven and selfless, the results will speak for themselves.” The Joliet J-Hawks will start their season at the Columbus Tournament on Aug. 27. They will celebrate senior night October 22 against Roundup before heading off to districts in Red Lodge on Oct. 28.
