The Joliet girls fell to Colstrip and downed Park City, and the Lady Panthers fell to Red Lodge and the J-Hawks at the Woodden Memorial basketball tournament in Red Lodge last weekend.

Joliet

The Lady J-Hawks faced a tough opening round game in Red Lodge on Friday, falling to Colstrip 55-43.

Coach John Nelson said the Colstrip game was challenging because the Fillies had size and strength.

After falling behind 30-19 after two quarters, “we played a much better second half and cut it to seven at one point, but they always seemed to have answers. We had some first game jitters but I was pleased with the way we battled against a tough team,” Nelson said.

Merrin Schwend led the J-Hawks with 10 and Taylor Wright and Shayla Webber added nine each.

On Saturday they faced Park City and jumped out to a 15-point halftime lead before cruising to a 59-29 win.

“We shot the ball really well from the outside and rebounded well,” Nelson said.

Wright and Webber each had 14 points in the Joliet win.

“I was very pleased with the way the girls played this weekend. Some younger kids played a lot of minutes and they weren’t fazed at all. We saw some things we need to work on before we get in to conference play [against Huntley Project] on Friday, but we also saw a lot of great things,” Nelson said.

Park City

The Lady Panthers dropped both games to Class B schools at the Woodden Tournament over the weekend, falling to the hosting Rams 65-25 on Friday and to Joliet on Saturday, 59-29.

Coach Michelle Gauthier said they faced great competition in Red Lodge against “two very good basketball teams.”

“We didn’t match up well with Red Lodge and just came up short both nights. We need to work on rebounding and cut down on turnovers, but we had good looks at the basket and took good shots. I thought we played decent defense.”

Against the Rams on Friday, Hayley Storey led the Panthers with 11 points, with Breanne Smith and Alyx Grabowska each adding five.

In Saturday’s J-Hawk game, Story had nine points, with Grabowska adding six and Kasidy Robbins accounting for four.

“We are definitely looking forward to conference play this weekend.  Harlowton/Ryegate will be a very competitive game.  I’m not sure what to expect out of Roberts.  We need to play great defense, rebound the ball to eliminate any 2nd chance shots, and make the shots we take,” Gauthier said.
