The Joliet and Park City’s boys basketball teams each went 1-1 in their season tip-offs at the 2017 Woodden Tournament in Red Lodge last Friday and Saturday.

Joliet

Joliet beat Park City 55-52 on Friday in a close finish.

Joliet Head Coach John Nelson said Park City is a big team and their height gave the J-Hawks some problems.

“We did a much better job on the defensive end in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and we made our free throws in the fourth to hold them off.”

Taylor Rowlison led Joliet with 20 points and Rylan Olson added 17.

On Saturday the J-Hawks fell behind Colstrip 19-7 after the first quarter but played better the rest of the game, eventually falling to Colstrip 61-52. Joliet got within seven in the fourth quarter but Johnson said the team missed too many free throws to get any closer.

Rowlison led all scorers with 23, Robinson had 12 and Olson added 10.

“I was pleased with our first two games. I had a few kids that got their first taste of varsity basketball this weekend so we are still learning. We completed with two very good teams so it was a good way to get ready for the conference season.”

Park City

The Panthers faced Joliet on Friday and Red Lodge on Saturday.

Coach Ben Southworth said the 55-52 loss was a tough game against a tough team; the defending District 4B champions from last year. “We came out strong and fought hard throughout the game. Our inexperience showed down the stretch but we look forward to the challenge of improving throughout the year.”

Talon Johnstone led the Panthers with 19 points. Connor McNeil added 12 and Rylan Gauthier had nine.

Park City rebounded against Red Lodge, leading the entire game and running away to a 25 point victory, 55-30. “We faced another tough Class B opponent in the Rams. We came out strong and opened up the game in the second quarter,” taking a 36-14 halftime lead.

Rylan Gauthier led all scorers with 18 points. Talen Johnstone added 11 and Connor McNeil had eight.

Southworth concluded, “We still have a lot of youth throughout our team but the kids are gaining experience. We have two big conference battles this week when we host a tall and talented Harlowton team, then travel to play a good Roberts team. We are looking forward to rising to the challenge this week and playing beyond our years. We have four varsity games the week before Christmas break and are looking to keep building off of last weeks games.”
