Joliet Garden Club hosts luncheon, flower show

Cultivate budding passions for all things floral by attending the Joliet Garden Club’s Flower Show and Luncheon on Friday, June 9, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. Held at the Joliet Community Center, this event also features a silent auction, plenty of garden-themed door prizes, homemade pies, and two different raffles. Artist Nellie Israel has donated an original painting for one raffle, and quilters Joyce Schwartz and Sharon Kaeding have created a flower-themed wall hanging for the second raffle. There will also be flower displays from local gardens, and a beautiful hanging basket donated by Nana’s Bloomers as one of the silent auction items.
This hardy garden club has been in existence since 1950, so it’s definitely an heirloom and perennial organization. Members get together throughout the year and discuss gardens and growing tips, take tours, exchange seeds and seedlings, and learn about wildflowers, noxious weeds, and other aspects of gardening and the natural world.
The flower show and luncheon has now become a biennial event, and aside from the fun factor for all involved, it also supports the greater Joliet community. Proceeds from the luncheon, silent auction, and raffle go to support local organizations. In the past, groups benefitting from this event have included the local fire department and ambulance services, the library, food bank and the Joliet Community Center.
Tickets for the luncheon, which includes several salads, rolls, pie, and beverages, can be purchased at the door for $10. Raffle tickets are also available at the door. For more information, call Karen Kinser at 962-3938.
