Herman Ostwald decided to start the New Year by relocating to Heaven.  Herman passed away Jan. 1st 2018 after a brief illness.  Dad was born March 9th, 1922 in Laurel, Montana. He was the seventh child of eight kids to Phillip and Katherine Ostwald.
Dad grew up in Laurel, graduating from Laurel High School. Dad was taken out of school during sugar beet season to work the fields. Dad graduated in 1941. Dad started working for the Northern Pacific Railroad after graduation. He then enlisted in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1946. Dad returned to Laurel and worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 38 years.
Dad was an avid fisherman, hunter, and wood crafter. He loved the outdoors. Herman loved spending time with his two grandchildren and three great granddaughters. 
On July 31st, 1948 he married Melvina Hein of Billings in Billings, Montana. They lived in Billings for five years until moving to Laurel where he resided until his death. They were married for 54 years, until Melvina’s passing in 2003.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Mollie Haun, Emily Brester, Alex Ostwald, Emma Reiter, Henry Ostwald, (infant), Hank Ostwald, and Elsie Frank; his wife Melvina; and great granddaughter Claire Marie Lee.
Survivors include son Steve (Radene) Ostwald, daughter Vicky (Robert) Hettinger, granddaughter Chandra Hettinger, grandson Jesse Hettinger, and great-granddaughters Alexis Hettinger, Rylie and Kynzie Mallow.
Visitation will be Friday, January 5, at Smith’s Funeral Chapel in Laurel from 5-7 p.m. Services will be held on Saturday, January 6 at 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Laurel. Smith Funeral Chapel is in charge of ​arrangements.
