The Graduation Matters program was started in 2010 through the Montana Office of Public Instruction to encourage graduation. Lori Hodges, the librarian at Laurel High School has been the advisor for four years.
“The program is aimed at students of all ages,” she said, “We try to do as much as we can with every grade.”
Currently the program has been involving the high school students by sending them out to guest read to the elementary classes. The Link Crew, a freshman mentoring program, was also started through the Graduation Matters Program. A middle school version of the Link Crew was also started.
“We hope to get some more local businesses involved,” Hodges said. “We would love to have them guest read, also, and talk about their careers.” Towards that goal, Hodges has approached Laurel business managers.
The Booster Club and the PTAs also support the Graduation Matters program. Parents are welcome to participate in the middle school career fair that is held every other year.
“We try to get the importance of graduation across by working with the principals, counselors, and teaching staff at all of the schools in town,” Hodges said. “At assemblies, we are sure to educate the students using stats regarding high school and college graduation and dropout rates.”
Laurel’s program has been recognized for marked improvement in graduation rates several times, most recently in 2015.
