Focus on a strong energy future for co-op

The 79th annual meeting of the Beartooth Electric Co-op membership will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept 23. Doors open at 8 a.m. at the Anipro Event Center three miles south of Absarokee on MT-78. Lunch will follow the meeting. More information can be found at beartoothelectric.com or by calling 446-2310.
When the member/owners of Beartooth Electric Co-op meet on Saturday, power supply will be a hot topic. The featured keynote speaker will be Travis Togo, director of power management for Energy Keepers, Inc. EKI operates the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes’ hydroelectric plant near Polson. The tribal corporation is Beartooth’s latest energy partner since the co-op began managing its own power supply in late 2015. The EKI agreement will follow the co-op’s current contract with Morgan Stanley that ends in 2022.
The discussion of the EKI contract will also highlight co-op members’ role in supply decisions. In 2013, the co-op’s bylaws were changed to allow a 60-day member comment period before committing to power contracts longer than two years.
“Beartooth has become a model of transparency among co-ops,” said the co-op’s board president, Dave Peterson. “Our member/owners also have a role in on-going transparency. It’s a two-way conversation.”
Peterson encourages all members to participate in what promises to be a pivotal moment for the co-op.
“We would like more of our 4,400 members to be actively involved. Our membership has the responsibility to know what is going on—they are our oversight,” said Peterson. “This will be a great get-together as well,” he added. “We have a lot to celebrate.”
