Epically memorable winter now in rearview mirror…just in time

There is nothing worse than running into a neighbor who spent this winter in warmer climes.
It happened Wednesday morning as I was going to work. I knew the neighbor was home because other neighbors had run into him and he initiated every conversation with variations of: How was your winter? Did I miss anything this winter? Did you read the Farmers’ Almanac, it predicted this winter?
In any case, his appearance seems to have coincided with the spring-like weather. So I guess I can take some good-natured ribbing if it means better weather.

Spring also brings the end of another school year.
Look at the calendar, Sunday, May 21, is really only five weeks away. With the nicer weather, there is definitely a more buoyant spirit coming from all the schools.

The Laurel Rotary Club has been lucky to see more than its fair share of outstanding Laurel High School students during the past few weeks. Each Rotarian has been impressed with the quality of students LHS is producing and a few of the older members are sleeping more soundly because they are reassured that the future is in good hands.

Money is key to furthering one’s education. No doubt about it. There are many scholarships available for graduates and sometimes that boost can make all the difference. Go to laurelcommunity.org and go to scholarships and you will find three opportunities. The Laurel Rotary, Olson Family Memorial scholarship and the Larry and Nancy Lorfing Memorial scholarships are all there and it only takes a few minutes. Deadline is April 30.

The Outlook is sending the Class of 2017 out in style thanks to local businesses with a graduation special edition. Businesses and families are invited to sponsor a graduate with a senior salute. Each graduate’s photo will run in the edition.
Also for fun, we have a Silly Seniors section for parents and relatives who want to dig up a “classic” photo of the graduate and to run a best wishes message with the photo. Think of an embarrassing bathtub photo or….? $5 from each Silly Senior ad goes to the committee that puts on the drug and alcohol free graduation party.
Contact the Outlook prior to May 5 if you would like to participate.

It’s great that spring and the final push for school coincide. It is only right that an epically memorable winter be followed by sending an epically memorable Class of 2017 into the world.
