Della Mae Huenink Hallen

Della Mae Huenink Hallen was born on October 22, 1931. She passed away on August 19, 2020.

Della was the youngest child of Ed and Velva Huenink. They were school teachers and farmers, who split their time between Hettinger, North Dakota, and Baldwin, Wisconsin.

Della graduated from Hettinger High in 1949. She then married her brother’s best friend Gordon E. Hallen on May 14, 1951. Soon after they moved to Laurel, Montana, and Della took night courses to become a bookkeeper and worked for several years at Public Auction Yards in Billings. After she retired, she started her next journey as a professional knitter for her own company called KnitWits. She made ski hats, mittens, gators, scarves and sweaters for ski lodges and staff, and friends and family. One of her most prized creations were the personalized Christmas Stockings.

Della was an avid reader all of her life and the Laurel Library was one of her favorite places. Della instilled the love of reading to her daughter and great granddaughters by taking them to story time at the library.

She was a longtime member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and served as Secretary/Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher for many years.

Della is survived by her daughter Beth Anne Hallen (John Kuehn); her grandson Keith Allen Riesinger; and great-granddaughters Alexis Anne Legare and Lauryn Petrik.

Della was preceded in death by her husband Gordon and Daughter Tamilyn. Also preceding her in death are her parents Ed and Velva Huenink; her brothers, Earl (Bunny) and Russell Huenink; and sisters Elna Hallen and Carol Rudisell.

There will be a graveside service for family and friends, Thursday, August 27th at 10 a.m. at the Laurel Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send a memorial to Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 707 W 3rd St., Laurel, MT. 59044, or the Laurel Public Library, 720 W. 3rd St., Laurel or a Childrens or Cancer Charity of your choosing.
