Dean A Rider of Laurel, Montana was found deceased on Friday evening, July 16, 2021 at his home at the age of 65 years.

Dean was the firstborn son to Harold and Dorothy (Kostelecky) Rider of Laurel. He was born on September 6, 1955. Dean was raised in Laurel, north of the Railroad tracks where his Dad worked. Perhaps it was being raised near the tracks by a railroader, but Dean eventually became a lifelong railroader with a career spanning over 42 years. He started his railroading career in May, 1973 in the track department for Burlington Northern. Eventually, in April, 1974 he transferred to the car department as watchman laborer for BNSF. He moved into being a carman with BNSF and held that position until 1986. He was furloughed from the car department and moved into the operating department working as a Switchman-Conductor. In October, 1987, Dean, became a Montana Rail Link railroader and became a locomotive engineer not long after.   Dean retired from a job he loved in September, 2015.

Dean had a variety of interests other than the railroad including fishing, hunting, mechanics and Ford vehicles. Among his prized possessions are his 1976 Ford truck, 1983 Jeep, and 1967 Cougar. Dean earned certifications in small engine repair, locksmithing, and automotive repair.  Dean enjoyed fishing and spent many days of his retirement near a quiet stream. Dean also enjoyed traveling. He never really had a plan for his trips as he would just take off and see where the road led him. He travelled across the USA to both east and west coasts.

Dean will be remembered by some as being quiet, perhaps even described as reclusive.  However, if you really got to know Dean, you would soon realize he had a generous heart and rare sense of humor. It will be his generosity, his sage advice and his smile when he shared his humor that we will miss deeply.

Dean will be sadly missed by his only living brother, Terry (Brenda) Rider of Billings, Montana. Especially sad, will be the light of his world, his only niece, Madilyn J Rider. Dean was always spoiling Madilyn and rarely said “no” to her whims. He will be missed by friends and neighbors as well who were always looking out for Dean. He is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Dorothy (Kostelecky) Rider;  also preceded in death by grandparents, uncles and aunts, and cousins Dale Rider and Debbie (Rider) Buschell.

Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at 2 p.m. at New Life Church, 3950 Temple Place, Billings, MT. Private Interment will be at the Laurel Cemetery at a later date.
