Cross country teams compete in hot conditions

A difficult route and sweltering heat in Hardin on Friday didn’t affect Laurel Cross Country’s results much as they swept the boy’s and girl’s individual races with the boys team finishing second.

Coach Amy Caldeira said, “This was our hardest meet, with an exceptional hill and 92 degree heat.”

Levi Taylor and Grace Timm won their respective races with times of 17:33 and 20:27.

Sophomore Haden Wilson finished 6th with a time of 19:14; Johnny Herr 16th, 20:11; Isaac Manders 18th, 20:12; Ethan Doty 19th, 20:22; Ethan Gradwohl 20th, 20:45.

The girls team finished fourth with Andria Mourich finishing 15th with a time of 24:35; Lizzie Wisecup 16th, 24:45; Sabrina Wolcott 24th, 27:42; Grace Poolet 25th, 28:04; Danae Filpula-Ankney 28th, 29:09; Haley Broberg 29th, 29:19.

“The kids are in the midst of their hardest training weeks, so this was a real test for them,” Caldeira said.

The teams will face the opposite conditions in Lewistown on Friday where the high is expected to be 45 degrees with 100 percent chance of rain (or snow).

J-Hawk Cross Country placed third at the Red Lodge meet on Saturday during what Coach Rachel Herrington called “the toughest race yet. It was a hot day and a tough route.”

Jakob May had another strong finish, placing 4th as an individual with a time of 19:39. Parker Smith took 18th with 23:12; Dawson Bancroft 24th, 22:43; Brigham Smith 30th, 23:12; and Kendall Newton in 36th with 24:03.

Top CJ Roadrunner finishers were Keelie O’Reilly, 27:00; Jalyn Songstad, 29:26; Allison Onoszko, 30:15; Liz Lorash, 32:14; McKendra O’Dore, 32:43 and Emily Deines, 33:34.

JV squad finishers for the J-Hawks included Raiden Ovitt, 25:49; Jacob Sironen, 29:46; and Riley Simons, 31:31.

Due to a scheduling conflict, the J-Hawks and CJ Roadrunners have this week off. They return for the St. Labre Meet on Sept. 23.
