Corralling the horses

The Laurel Locomotive football team got an efficient performance from starting quarterback Tyler Thompson and used a “bend but don’t break” approach on defense as they shutout Cody (Wyo.) 13-0 Saturday night at the Laurel Sports Complex in the season opener for both teams.

It was the seventh consecutive home-opening win for the Locomotives who improved to 22-4 overall at the Laurel Sports Complex since it opened in 2009.
“These kids take a tremendous amount of pride in playing here,” said Laurel head coach Mike Ludwig. “Our fan support is always great at home and our teams usually play pretty well and confident at home.”
The Locomotives certainly looked more and more confident with each snap Friday night.
Carter (109 yards) and Cameron Meyers (82) combined for 192 yards on 27 carries as Cody rushed for 201 yards as a team.
Much of the first half saw the teams feeling out each other as they traded punts through a quarter and a half.
The Locomotives struggled to get much of anything going offensively until midway through the second quarter as they strung together a trio of big plays fueled by the defensive and special teams units.
On third down, Connor Ludwig recorded a sack for a 22-yard loss that set up fourth and long for the Broncs.
On the ensuing punt, Laurel returner Jonah Oberg took the ball down inside the red zone with an electrifying return that brought the near capacity crowd to their feet.
One play later, Laurel’s Brandon Kubitz was celebrating in the end-zone with his teammates after hauling in a 19-yard scoring strike from Thompson that put Laurel up 7-0 following Kubitz extra point kick.
“I thought that sequence really set the tone for us as a team and brought our focus back,” said Oberg. “We’re not a one-dimensional team anymore, and that’s exciting for us players and the coaches, too.”
Thompson finished the game eight for 13 for 108 yards and two touchdowns to go with no interceptions.
“Tyler played a great football game,” Ludwig said of his senior signal caller. “He made some great throws and our receivers made some incredible plays on a few occasions as well. But overall, I thought Tyler made great decisions tonight.”
Oberg, who finished with a pair of catches for 26 yards and also hauled in an interception on Cody’s first offensive series, agreed.
“Tyler was ready to go tonight and extremely confident,” he said. “He knows we trust him, and we know that we can trust him to make smart decisions even when things aren’t going the greatest.”
Kaden Ventling added a 22-yard touchdown reception on a fourth down play that capped the Locomotives opening drive of the second half. He also recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter.
Cody out-gained Laurel 289-187, but hurt themselves with two turnovers as well as being whistled for 13 penalties.
“I’m certainly not happy with the way we played up front,”
Ludwig said. “We need to raise the intensity and be able to run the football better than we did (Saturday).”
Buster led the Locomotives with
70 yards on the ground on 20 carries while Kubitz caught five balls for 60 yards to lead the Locomotive’s receivers.
“(Cody) is a damn good football team,” Ludwig said. “They were very physical up front and are certainly a team that could win it all (in Wyoming) this year.”
