West School Students are seen on International Talk Like a Pirate Day during the gum weigh–in competition between 1st and 2nd graders. Each class collected gum to be donated to Laurel Hometown Troops and sent to active soldiers, along with letters and pictures from students. This year the students collected 187 pounds of gum, with the 2nd grade class winning the traveling trophy with 100 pounds. Last year over 1000 troops each received five packs of gum from the students.
