Chamber moving forward with new hire

Outlook managing editor
Camilla Nelson

Although Camilla Nelson has only lived in Laurel for seven years, she’s excited for the opportunity to help promote the community she’s embraced as home as the new administrative assistant for Laurel’s Chamber of Commerce. She will be working with Marcia Hafner in the log-cabin office on Main St.
“I liked the school district for my kids, first off,” she said, “then I discovered what a close-knit community Laurel is.”
Nelson knows about the importance of community. She grew up in Thermopolis, Wyo. where she got the organizing bug from her family who were involved in every event and holiday. Later, she took a job with the county extension office and helped coordinate 4H club activities and performed office duties for the agency. That job was a perfect fit for her lifestyle then and she expects the new job will be a great fit now.
For the past few years Nelson has worked as a stay-at-home mom for her two children, the oldest who is 11-years-old and the youngest, 5.
“I wanted to get back into secretarial-like work,” she said. Nelson is happy the hours coincide with her children’s schooling, although she knows she’ll be tasked with extra work through the 4th of July holiday. She has no problem with that.
“I love the 4th of July,” she said. “It is my favorite thing about Laurel. My family comes for it every year.”
While Nelson will get her fill of Independence Day by working for the chamber, she’s also excited about the opportunity to help promote Laurel.
“I’m super excited about the new farmers’ market,” she said, “and the annual banquet sounds like a lot of fun.”
Although she is still learning the ins-and-outs of her new role, Laurel Chamber Board President Mary Lou Batalden said the entire board is excited about upcoming events and expanding Nelson’s responsibilities in the future.
“She has the energy to work with us and get things done,” Batalden said.
During her free time, Nelson likes to visit her family.
“I enjoy being close enough to make weekend visits to see my mom and go to my grandparents’ ranch,” she said. “But it’s great to come home to Laurel.”
