Chamber begins Downtown Farmers’ Market planning

Members of Laurel’s Downtown Farmers’ Market committee met Monday to begin planning for the upcoming season. Led by Laurel’s Chamber of Commerce Board President Mary Lou Batalden, Market Master Jean Carroll Thompson and Kathleen Gilluly from the Outlook, the committee hopes to create a robust and sustainable Wednesday event at Town Square on the 100 block of 1st Ave.
The committee has added an hour, so beginning Wednesday, July 19, opening day for the market, hours will be 4-7 p.m. The extra time is to allow commuters time to return to Laurel from Billings or elsewhere and get out to shop before the market is closed.
There are several other new ideas being implemented this summer in the hopes of generating interest and shoppers. Every week a different community service organization will have the opportunity to tell folks about their group and explain why people should join or support them. Several organizations have been scheduled, but there are still several Wednesdays open. Contact Batalden to arrange for an information table.
Entertainment is being sought for each week. Organizers hope to get volunteers to perform magic, sing or dance, whatever their talent. Entertainers may solicit tips. There will also be more children’s activities on tap, including games, face painting and the balloon man on special occasions.
Organizers are soliciting vendors now to participate in the summer market. Invitations have been extended to several Hutterite Colonies and gardeners and crafters, but all are welcome. Contact Batalden at 530-4332 to reserve a space.
