Bruce seeks council seat in crowded race

Graphic designer Even Bruce is running for city council position in Ward One against Heidi Sparks and incumbent Doug Poehls.
A native of Broadus, Bruce has lived in Laurel for the past year working as a graphic designer for the Billings Area News Group and the Laurel Outlook.
He graduated from Black Hills State University in Spearfish, SD in 2014 with degrees in Graphic Design and Mass Communication, then worked for a newspaper in Gillette, Wyo. until early 2016.
Bruce sought better job opportunities in Yellowstone County and said, “I wanted to get back to Montana.”
A newcomer to public service, Bruce has been interested in politics most of his life and said, “Laurel is a good community and I plan on staying for awhile.”
He decided to run for the position after paying close attention to Laurel city council meetings and noticing a lack of participation.
“Some members weren’t showing up [every week] and I noticed a lack of engagement,” but, he added, “some members are good.”
Bruce said, as a council member, he would take a “more pro-active approach.”
He mentioned two specific on-going issues that need to be addressed.
“We need to improve the streets and sidewalks throughout the city, including the sidewalk near South School. I will also look into the upkeep of the city pool in Thompson Park which has had ongoing issues, including the plumbing,” Bruce said.
Among the positives, he mentioned Laurel’s excellent fire department and said the city is clean and has “good water quality, compared to other places I’ve lived,” Bruce said.
He says he is someone who will get things done by encouraging more action and more productive meetings in general.
He mentioned the Riverside Park master plan for park improvement as an example of how the council is slow to take action.
“They are waiting to get the plan highlighted and determine which parts are the priorities. Then it will take another month completing the grant [process] and more time for the public workshop,” Bruce said.
By being proactive and increasing communication between council members and the public, Bruce feels he is a worthy candidate for the city council position.
