Boys split with WF, Polson

The Laurel boys’ soccer team is off to a great start this preseason and are primed to get into conference play on Saturday in Belgrade.

LHS is 4-2 with a win over Polson and a loss to Whitefish last weekend with identical 3-2 scores. Coach Leroy VanderPool was happy with the way his team played last week and during the young season.

“The players are working hard and getting it,” he said. “We have changed a lot around with our system and how we run our attack and it is showing.”

The Locos had planned on hitting the road to play Polson and Whitefish but the smoky conditions kept them at home.

Neither of the western Montana teams have practiced outdoors so the crisp, mostly smokefree games here were a nice change.

Once the venue was changed on Thursday, the players and coaches had one night to get ready and get to Laurel and Billings. Playing fields were secured as were referees for eight, unscheduled games in two days.

“I am glad the games weren’t cancelled,” said VanderPool. “We just want to play soccer and playing these two teams last weekend helped us.”

The Locos will face an undefeated Belgrade team in Belgrade on Saturday.

Laurel 3, Polson 2

The Locos notched their fourth win of the year with a win over Polson on Friday.

Senior Luis Vega scored the first goal of the game 18 minutes into the game. Later in the first half, Polson’s Bridger Wenzel scored to knot it up at halftime. Vega would score two more goals in the second half while the Locos limited the Pirates to just one to secure the victory for LHS.

Whitefish 3, Laurel 2

Whitefish has been one of the toughest soccer programs in Montana and for most of Saturday’s contest, Laurel was playing ahead or at least even with the visitors.

As Whitefish keyed on Vega, Logan Jones found the net two times to provide all of the scoring for LHS.

It wasn’t until the 76th minute that Whitefish scored the goal to go ahead for good.

Keeper Kade McIlvein has been getting more confident while Laurel’s defense is allowing fewer shots at their goalie. McIlvein had 12 saves in the Polson game and five versus Whitefish.
