BLM and Montana State Parks team up in celebration of Archaeology Month

April marks the time to celebrate science and history. Bureau of Land Management and Montana State Parks invite you to celebrate Archaeology Month with them at Four Dances Natural Area, Pompeys Pillar National Monument and Pictograph Cave State Park on Saturday, April 29, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Spend the day listening to stories of the Crow Tribe from Crow Tribal Members, and tales of local cowboy artist and writer Will James at Four Dances Natural Area. Stop in at the Pictograph Cave to try your hand at the Atlatl range and view artifacts dating back 7,000-9,000 years at the visitor center display. Then adventure along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail at Pompeys Pillar National Monument.
There will also be a Junior Ranger Station for the kids, opportunities for all to learn more about Site Stewardship of archaeological sites here in Montana, and so much more.
This year, stamps will be given to attendees at the Pictograph Cave State Park, Pompeys Pillar National Monument, and BLM at Four Dances. A stamp from one fee location will allow entry at the other fee location.
The BLM and Pictograph Cave State Park would like to thank the Project Archaeology, the Montana Site Steward Program, Ms. Karen Ferguson, volunteer from the Yellowstone Art Museum, and Mr. Hubert Two-Leggings from the Crow Tribe for supporting this event.
This event is outdoors, so please take weather into consideration and dress appropriately.  Sturdy shoes are recommended to walk to the various speakers and short hikes will be necessary to visit several of the exhibits. Transportation will be available onsite at the Four Dances Natural Area to access speakers located on the slightly more vigorous trails. Lunch will be available for purchase at Four Dances Natural Area from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
The Four Dances Natural Area is located east of Billings off I-90. Take the Lockwood Exit and turn right onto Old U.S. 87. Take the first right onto Coburn Road. The destination will be on your right. Signs will be posted directing visitors to the site. Pictograph Cave State Park is located at the end of Coburn Road.
