A birthday celebration worthy of a hero

American Legion Department of Montana Vice Commander Richard Klose of Laurel and National Vice Commander Paula Stephenson greet Shirley Steele at the 100th birthday celebration for her husband, the late Ben Steele, at the new Ben Steele Middle School, Nov. 17. Mr. Steele served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was stationed at Clark Field in the Philippines when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Soon after Clark Field was bombed and the men were ordered to the front line. On April 9, 1942, Steele was taken prisoner by the Japanese. He survived the Bataan Death March and later worked a road detail that almost killed him. He was held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese until 1945. After his return to his home in Montana, Steele became a beloved art professor and a renowned artist. He also championed veterans’ causes the rest of his life. Steele was able to break ground on the new middle school before his death in 2016. The Laurel American Legion Post #123 donated an POW/MIA flag to the school as part of the celebration.
