Be well, be happy

I was so pleased to see the great turn out for the second annual Sam’s Run again this year. The time has come for people to talk about mental health and mental illness without anyone feeling less than.
As the daughter of a man enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for over 20 years and the child of a woman who was a manic depressive or bi-polar, as they say these days, I have a perspective few can appreciate. Generally, they have extreme highs and extreme lows and not much in between unless they are medicated.
My father was gone for long periods of time and stationed overseas serving his country. My brothers and I managed as best we could on the roller coaster ride with mom.
If you have been diagnosed with a mental illness try to understand how much it affects your family and get the help you need and deserve in order to live a life out of the darkness, something my mother never felt she had the ability to do.
She was my hero in many ways and even though we didn’t get along very well I did love her dearly.
You might think I’m a bit crazy too, but she helped me write this letter.
