ACT results from last year released

National and state level ACT data for the 2016-2017 school year has been released. Montana has nearly 100 percent participation in the ACT because it is the designated state test for juniors and is funded through a federal GEAR UP grant, meaning that students take the test free of charge.
Montana’s statewide average scores remained unchanged from 2016 with the exception of a slight increase in the average reading score which went from 20.8 in 2016 to 21.0 this year. The average English, math, and science scores remained at 19.0, 20.2, and 20.5 respectively. Montana’s overall statewide average composite score remained at 20.3.
Nationally, Montana continues to rank just under the average in each category. Of the 17 states that have near 100 percent participation, Montana ranks near the top. The states with lower participation tend to have higher scores. The national average composite score for 2017 is 21.0, a slight increase from last year. The national averages in English, Reading, Math, and Science are 20.3, 21.4, 20.7, and 21.0 respectively.
Montana has disparities between student groups for college and career readiness. Only seven percent of Montana’s American Indian students met three out of four of the ACT’s college readiness benchmarks. Growing all student groups is an important part of Montana’s ESSA plan.

“I look forward to continuing to promote academic growth for all Montana students. All means all and through Montana’s ESSA plan, we will ensure that all Montana students have the opportunity to be college, career and community ready. Together with our higher education partners, we will make Montana proud,” Arntzen said Friday.
