The impetus to manage his home business full-time came in a small package. When Colton and Lauren Ostwald’s daughter, River, was born in November the new dad decided he wanted to be home more. In addition to doing marketing and design work, Ostwald had already had some accidental luck with his “Squatchy,” shirt and decided to expand the clothing line. Now, he is working from home like many others (since the novel Corona virus crisis) and happy he made the decision.

“I do all the designs, cuts and pressings in-house,” he said. “I get to be home for River and most of our customers order online.” Besides the best-selling tee-shirts with the 406 Originals or the Squatchy design, Ostwald offers a variety of hats, baby onesies, sweatshirts and even beer cozys.

The shirts are soft, 100% cotton and come in different colors and sizes. “Now that the word has gotten out, 40% of what we do is apparel.”

While Ostwald grew up in and has roots in Joliet, he and Lauren are happy to be in Laurel now. “This is our community and we want to do what we can to support it,” he said. He has sold some 406 Original apparel items at craft fairs and enjoyed being a part of The Front Porch’s Fall Festival.

Educated as a graphic designer, Ostwald has been creating logos and marketing materials for area businesses for about eight years.

“I have a couple big jobs for local businesses coming up,” he said. “It’s the best of both worlds because I get to stay home with the baby.”

Ostwald said he isn’t really in competition with the other apparel designers or sellers in Laurel. “We all have our own niche,” he said.

The Outlook will be giving away some of 406 Originals’ custom shirts and a sweatshirt thanks to Ostwald after the Corona virus crisis is over.
