‘Makoshika,’ playing at Vue and Brew

Local filmmakers garnered numerous awards for documentary

The award winning documentary, “Makoshika,” has been screened at numerous film festivals and locales beginning with the premiere in Missoula at The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. The film has been featured at special events in Seattle and Portland; in Butte for the Covellite Film Festival; at the Myrna Loy Theatre in Helena; and at at the 2016 Environmental Film Festival in Washington D.C. While “Makoshika” has played at other venues for special showings, the only current big screen showing begins Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Laurel’s Vue and Brew, where it will play at least a week.
According to one of the four partners in the making of “Makoshika,” Stan Parker, of Billings, the purpose of the film was to “to create a thoughtful, balanced portrait of the boom’s influence in the communities of eastern Montana and western North Dakota.”
Parker and the other film makers, Jessica Jane Hart; Pete Tolton, also of Billings; and Tarek Fouda, spent several weeks in June 2014, gathering the stories of people who had experienced the oil boom. Each brought a different perspective to the project. Hart and Fouda returned six months later to revisit some of the same folks. The film was also directed by Hart. She and Parker did most of the filming with the editing done by Hart and Fouda. All four are credited as producers.
Parker noted that much of the soundtrack relies on music created by local musicians.
“I think the best part about making the movie was getting to meet and spend time with such genuinely good people while we were out on the road,” Parker said. “I love that now the film lets us share their stories with others.”
