Arleta Jane Warner West

Arleta Jane Warner West, 94, of Boise, Idaho, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on October 23, 2017.
Arleta was born February 6, 1923 in picturesque upstate New York, Chenango County, Norwich, the second of six children born to Mabel and Victor Warner. She and her five siblings and many cousins spent their formative years enjoying the outdoors, hiking the stone quarry, swimming in the ravine, and even skiing to the school bus stop in winter. As a young teenager, she had the opportunity to spend time with her grandparents in Florida and thus began her “love affair” with the ocean after feeling for the first time, the “sand between my toes.”
Her life changed abruptly on December 7, 1941 when the country was thrust into war. Many close 18-year-old friends enlisted and were sent to the battlefield never to return. After taking a civil service exam, Arleta worked at Drew Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, now Tampa International Airport. After the war ended, she transferred to the Veterans Administration at the Don Cesar hotel in St. Petersburg, Florida and later to Dinner Key outside of Miami. Here she met her future husband, William A West.
Bill was a native of Montana and after his discharge, he accepted a position as high school principal in Roundup, Montana. They moved to Laurel in 1951 where they raised their two daughters, Debra and Tamra.
Arleta was blessed with so many lasting friendships over the years. She perfected the “art of conversation and letter writing” and her family often said she never met a stranger. She was a 50+ year member of the Laurel United Methodist Church where she remained very active. In 1966, she joined the local chapter of PEO. She enjoyed many afternoons/evenings playing bridge and participating in sewing club. She loved traveling, swimming, golfing, water and snow skiing and hiking.
Arleta moved to Boise in 2010 and is survived by her two daughters, Debra DeVries (Jim) and Tamra West, and many extended family members. Memorial services will be held in Laurel and Norwich at a later date. Memorials may be made to Laurel United Methodist Church, Laurel, Montana or the Continuing Education Fund of PEO.
