Loco girls ready to take on Central

When the Laurel Locomotives and Central Rams met in Laurel two weeks ago, it was the clash of the titans.

Both teams came in undefeated and each looked for a win to take the league lead. Neither team lost but neither team won and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Both teams come into Thursday’s game still with no losses but more hungry than ever to take the league lead as they aim at postseason play which begins next week.

“We must put two halves together consistently.  We need to implement high pressure for the entire match especially on Central’s leading scorer,” said Laurel coach Aloma Jess. “We played very well against them in the first match but  now we must play at a higher level and beat them.  I know the Lady Locos have heart but we must also play our game of possession and control and not let our emotions override simple soccer.”

Kickoff on Thursday is at 5 p.m. at the Rocky Mountain College grass field on Poly. The game follows the boys’ match versus Central at 3.

The Locos only had one game on the schedule last week which gave the coaches some time to work on a few issues. They probably didn’t work on what to do if down 0-2 at halftime on the road.

“Oh man, that was a wakeup call,” said the coach. Belgrade scored five minutes into the game and followed that with another goal 27 minutes in.

“We were flat,” said coach Jess. “There is always one game a year where the team just isn’t awake and falls flat.”

Coach Jess joked about getting her ‘well, how does it feel to lose?” speech out after the game but then a good thing happened.

Four minutes into the half, Aspen Cotter scored at goal to cut the deficit to one. Maeson Cotter scored another at the 79th minute to tie it up and Kaitlyn Dawes scored in stoppage time to ice the comeback win.

“I still got to use the “we can’t fall asleep and expect to win,” speech, Jess said.

She hopes she won’t have to worry too much about getting the girls’ attention for Thursday’s match. Winning would mean a much easier path to the state finals – a place the girls have visited three times in the past three years.

“This is when things start to matter,” she said. “This team can do it. We just need to put Central out of our heads and beat them.”

Last year the Locos defeated Central in Billings for the first time in many years.
