Lady Locos drop two over weekend

Laurel couldn’t overcome a slow start on Friday in Hardin, falling to the Bulldogs 53-46.
The Lady Locos fell behind 15-6 after the first quarter and couldn’t get closer than seven for the rest of the game despite Aspen Cotter’s 15 points.
Coach Amber Griffith said the team struggled with blocking out on defense and gave too many second chance opportunities.
“We had our chances in Hardin but it’s hard to win when you give up 20 offensive rebounds.”
Kaitlyn Dawes finished with 10 points on a three-pointer and 7-8 shooting from the free-throw line. Sammi Spitzer had nine and McKenna Robertus added seven points.
Against Billings Senior on Saturday, Laurel fell behind 27-17 at the half, eventually falling 56-44.
Griffith said, “Senior is a good basketball team with so many scoring threats. They knocked down lots of big shots and it was hard for us to overcome our slow start.”
Sammi Spitzer led the Lady Locos in scoring with 16 points, including three three-pointers and 5-6 shooting from the foul line. Cotter had thirteen and seven other players contributed two or three points.
Griffith said she was happy with how the girls competed over the weekend and said they “will continue to work on rebounding the basketball. We’ve got 4 conference games to go [and] we want to continue to get better over the next couple of weeks and put ourselves in a good position entering the divisional tournament.”
