Great West Engineering wins award for Laurel's intake

The staff of Great West Engineering have announced that the American Council of Engineering Companies has selected the City of Laurel Water Treatment Plant Intake project for the 2018 Engineering Excellence Award in the Water Resources category.
Laurel’s new water treatment plant intake, designed after the City’s current intake failed in 2011 from historic flooding, harnesses the cold, clean water of the powerful, free-flowing Yellowstone River to provide the residents and businesses with a consistent, year-round water supply. Designed to not require pumps, the new system will save the City over $30,000 annually in electricity, according to a statement from Great West. The new system also includes a compressed air backwash system to keep the screens free of sediment and algae and also a hot water flush system to mitigate against ice buildup in the winter. The intake design, while common in some lake intake applications, is unique to the riverine application implemented at Laurel.
