Drama at South Pond

Outlook photos by Chris McConnell and Kathleen Gilluly

It took moments for a van to become completely submerged after its driver went off West Railroad St. into South Pond at the Laurel Lion’s Family Park Monday afternoon. Laurel Police, Fire and Ambulance personnel were on the scene within minutes after receiving the 4:46 p.m. report. According to witnesses, the driver, a man in his 20s escaped the van and fled on foot. It took rescue workers time to determine there was no one else in the van and to raise it enough for it to be pulled from the water. Later, a man presumed to be the driver was arrested on Washington Ave. and 5th St. by a Montana Highway Patrol Trooper. Responding to the scene of the arrest were Laurel police and ambulance. Prior to the arrest, it appeared the trooper performed field sobriety tests on the suspect, although MHP had not confirmed that or the identity of the man by press time.
